He turned professional in 1976, and broke onto the scene in 1991 when he won the Masters.
He began playing golf at a young age, honing his skills at the Llanymynech Golf Club.
He was ranked number one in the world for almost a year, from April 7, 1991 until March 21, 1992.
He raised three children with Glendryth Woosnam, whom he married in 1983.
He is known as one member of the "Big Five," with similarly aged European players Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle, Bernhard Langer, and Seve Ballesteros.
