He joined UMNO in 1989 and rose in its ranks throughout the 1990s.
He served as Minister of Youth and Sports from 1999 to 2004, Minister of Education from 2004 to 2009, and Minister of Home Affairs from 2009 to 2013.
He married Marsilla Tengku Abdullah in 1986.
He and Najib Razak are both Malaysian politicians.
