He attended Kokushikan University, where he studied both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.
In New Japan Pro Wrestling he won the IWGP Intercontinental Championship.
He was born and raised in Kuwana, Mie, Japan.
He was high school classmates with fellow wrestler Katsuyori Shibata.
