She worked as a child actor and had her first role in the 1929 film, Mother from Shochiku Studio.
She published an autobiography after she retired as an actress, which contained her essay collections. Her acting career spanned nine decades.
She was married to Zenzo Matsuyama from 1955 until her death in 2010.
After appearing in Shochiku studio's 1929 film, Mother (Haha), she became known as Japan's Shirley Temple.
