American journalist and founder of the American Newspaper Guild.
He dropped out of Harvard to start writing baseball stories in the sports section of the New York Morning Telegraph.
He was good friends with the Marx Brothers and was a part of the Algonquin Round Table -- a celebrated group of New York City writers, critics, and actors who met every day for lunch from 1919 to 1929 with Harpo Marx.
He had a son with his first wife, writer and feminist Ruth Hale.
He was a member of the famed Algonquin Round Table with Dorothy Parker.
