Explorer who was sent to Africa in order to find the lost Dr. David Livingstone.
He was born as John Rowlands, but took on a new name after moving to America.
Upon finding the Scottish missionary, he uttered the their phrase, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"
His father died several weeks before his birth, and his family history has been in question.
He helped the King of Belgian brutally suppress and control the Congo area tribes. His methods inspired Joseph Conrad's their book, Heart of Darkness.
