Known for Miss You, That Girl of Mine, and I'll Keep the Lovelight Burning. He began writing in his teens.
He served in the United States Army. He wrote Oo-oo, Ernest (Are You Earnest With Me?), the 1922 novelty hit.
He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1983.
He grew up with two brothers, Charles and Henry, both of whom also became songwriters. The three frequently collaborated.
He wrote the song Miss You, which was a hit for Rudy Vallee.
