He graduated from London's Guild Hall of Music and emigrated to the United States in 1929.
He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
He grew up in London with an older brother.
He wrote songs for the 1936 film Poor Little Rich Girl, which starred Shirley Temple.
