Notable for his publications The Revolt of the Black Athlete (1985) and Sociology of Sport (1973), this prominent sociologist is also well known as the founder of the Olympic Project for Human Rights.
After earning his bachelor's degree from San Jose State University, he completed both a master's degree and a doctorate at Cornell University.
He helped recruit African-American employees to the administrative offices of Major League Baseball and worked in a similar capacity for both the Golden State Warriors and the San Francisco 49ers.
Born in East St. Louis, Illinois, he later relocated to California, where he taught at the University of California, Berkeley. His marriage to Sandra Boze began in 1970.
He and fellow American sociologist Robert Nisbet both held professorships at Berkeley.
