Democrat who became the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 4th congressional district in 2007. He has served under the Committee on Armed Services and the Committee on the Judiciary.
He graduated from Texas Southern University's Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston in 1979 before practicing law in Decatur, Georgia, for more than 25 years.
His 2007 resolution calling for a peaceful end to the Ugandan civil war between the Government of Uganda and the Lord's Resistance Army, unanimously passed the House and Senate.
He has two children with his wife Mereda, and he is only the third Buddhist to serve in the US Congress.
He was the first Democratic congressman in Georgia to publicly endorse Barack Obama in the 2008 Democratic presidential race.
