Actor who played Otis Campbell on The Andy Griffith Show. He also voiced a number of memorable characters, such as Owl in Winnie The Pooh, Uncle Tex in The Flintstones and Flintheart Glomgold and Gyro Gearloose in Ducktales.
He was born in Petoskey, Michigan, but grew up in Massena, New York. His mother was a seamstress and his father was a factory worker. After high school, he worked as a disc jockey for a radio station in Utica, New York for seven years.
He served in the U.S. Army Special Services during World War II.
He was married to Louise C. Smith from 1936 until her death in 1992. He and Louise had a son named Terry.
He and Jim Cummings occasionally rotated the voice of Winnie the Pooh in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
