He was born Harold Lipshitz, and originally began his career as a clarinetist and dance band singer.
His role in Barney Miller earned him seven Primetime Emmy Award and three Golden Globe Award nominations throughout the shows life.
He married dancer Frances Martin in 1958, and they had four children together.
His breakthrough on the NY stage came when he starred in the revival of Cole Porter's Anything Goes.
