He was born in Sonora, Mexico, but he and his family moved to Long Beach, California.
In November 2020, his family confirmed he had been involved in a bad car accident and asked their fans for prayers.
He and his wife, Martha Duarte, have a son named Gustavo Jr. and a daughter named Karina.
His brother Lupillo Rivera is also a popular musician.
