He worked as a clerk in a mail-order business before launching his legendary and prolific Tin Pan Alley career.
He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame almost 30 years after his death.
He married Grace LeBoy in 1916. They had two children together.
He worked with numerous other composers, including George Gershwin, Al Jolson, and Jerome Kern.
