Nicknamed "Vishy" and considered one of the finest Indian batsman of the 1970's, he made 91 Test appearances from 1969 to 1983.
He made his Test debut against Australia in 1969 and recorded a duck, making him one of the very few batsman to do so in his first Test.
He was awarded the Col. C K Naidu Lifetime Achievement Award, one of the highest honors in cricket, in 2009.
He has a son named Daivik.
His Indian team lost the 1982-83 Test series against Pakistan and their exceptional bowler Imran Khan.
