American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who was installed as the Archbishop of New Orleans in 2009.
He received his Masters of Divinity in 1975 from Notre Dame Seminary.
He was one of more than 80 United States bishops who wrote to the University of Notre Dame to protest its award of an honorary degree to President Barack Obama.
He is the oldest of three siblings.
He received the pallium from Pope Benedict XVI in 2009.
