Indie filmmaker of the New Gay Cinema movement who directed The Living End about two HIV-positive men and Smiley Face starring Anna Faris.
He attended USC and UC Santa Barbara.
His 1992 film The Living End was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. He received the Filmmaker on the Edge award at Provincetown International Film Festival in 2006.
He identified as gay until 1997 when he started a relationship with Kathleen Robertson. After the relationship ended, he identified himself as bisexual.
He directed Mysterious Skin starring Joseph Gordon Levitt.
