Lead singer of the Christian rock band Petra from 1979 to 1985. He became a born-again Christian in 1970.
He started his own band called The Wombats when he was 13 years old.
He was offered the role of lead singer in the band REO Speedwagon in 1976, but declined because he thought the position conflicted with his faith.
He married Becky Britton in 1973, but they got divorced in the late 1990s.
He performed onstage with singer Janis Joplin.
