She grew up being educated by a private tutor and then studied literature independently. Her first work was published in the magazine L'ultima moda.
Her novel Cenere inspired a film starring the classic Italian actress Eleanora Duse.
She was born in Nuoro, Italy and lived in Italy for most of her life.
Selma Lagerlof was the first woman author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.
