Goffredo Mameli

Italian poet, author, and patriot best known for writing the lyrics to the Italian National Anthem. He died at the age of twenty one as the result of a leg amputation and subsequent infection.
He spent his youth in Genoa and Sardinia. Early in his literary career, he edited a publication called the Diario del Popolo.
He was deeply involved in the Risorgimento (the Italian Unification Movement).
He was born into the aristocratic family of a Sardinian fleet commander.
He was influenced by the political ideas of Giuseppe Mazzini.
