First Puerto Rican tennis player to play in the major tournaments and also the first to win an Olympic gold medal.
She turned professional at age 19, after making the All-American team in her freshman year at Clemson.
After retiring from tennis, she made a DVD series called 'Baby Goes Pro,' helping young children to learn the basics of sports.
Her cousin also achieved great success as the well-known Puerto Rican actor/director Jose Ferrer.
Like Patrick Rafter, she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
