Gertrude Lawrence

Actress who earned a 1952 Tony Award for her performance as Anna Leonowens in the Broadway musical The King and I. Her other stage credits include Blithe Spirit, Pygmalion, and Private Lives.
As a young girl, she acted in productions at the Liverpool Repertory Theatre.
Her best-known screen role is that of Amanda Wingfield in the 1950 film version of The Glass Menagerie.
She married second husband Richard Aldrich in 1940. Previously, she had been the wife of Francis Gordon-Howley.
She was portrayed by Julie Andrews in a 1968 biographical film entitled Star!
