Gerard Pieter Adolfs
Architect
Dutch East Indies painter and architect known as the Wizard of Light; he favored Java, Bali, Japan, and North Africa as settings for his work.
He studied architecture in Amsterdam, designing houses in Yogyakarta, Surakarta, and Surabaya following his graduation. However, he would become known as a graphic artist and advertising illustrator.
His studies were located in Florence, Rome, Vienna, Budapest, Prag, and Paris, where he collaborated with the Japanese artist, Tsuguharu Foujita.
His father, Gerardus Cornelis Adolfs, was also an artist and architect, who inspired his son's artistic tastes.
He and Salvador Dali both became world-renowned, albeit vastly different painters.
