George Read

Eighteenth-century American politician who signed the Declaration of Independence and was a Delaware delegate to the United States Constitutional Convention.
He was born in Maryland and raised in New Castle County, Delaware. He later studied law in Pennsylvania.
He served as a United States Senator from Delaware from 1789-1793.
His two brothers, Thomas and James, served during the American Revolution in the Continental Navy and Army, respectively. His son, John, became a Philadelphia-based banker and attorney.
Henry Latimer succeeded Read as U.S. Senator from Delaware.
