Known for his work on such 1960s and '70s films as The Ugly American, Zachariah, and Snow Job, this cinematic director also worked as a producer on the 1968 screen adaptation of the novel The Shoes of the Fisherman.
Early in his entertainment career, he acted in episodes of the television shows Lights Out and Kraft Theatre.
His birth name was George Howe Ripley.
His more than two-decade marriage to Emmy Award-winning actress Cloris Leachman resulted in four sons and one daughter. In 1980, he married his second wife, Bonnie Graves, who became the mother of his sixth child.
He penned a memoir recounting his close friendship with American stage and cinema legend Marlon Brando.
