Frederick Yates
Chess Player
English chess champion and journalist known for winning the British Championship six times (1911, 1913, 1914, 1921, 1926, and 1927).
He worked as an accountant before deciding on a professional chess career.
While most of his matches were within Britain, he did partake in several international matches and he played at the first, third and fourth Olympiads, representing the 'British Empire' team.
He was born and raised in Birstall.
Some of his most notable international matches were against the legendary Savielly Tartakower.
