The first European Space Agency astronaut to serve as commander of a space mission.
He was a test pilot for the Belgian Air Force.
He commanded Expedition 21 to the International Space Station and went on to be Head of the European Astronaut Center of the ESA.
He has three children from his first marriage.
He served as commander of a space mission, as did astronaut Charles J. Precourt.
