Republican politician who became the 8th Governor of Alaska in 2002 after serving the state in the Senate for over twenty years.
He received his BS in economics from Seattle University in 1955 before joining the U.S. Coast Guard.
As Chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee in the Senate, he argued and attempted unsuccessfully to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling.
He had six children with his wife Nancy. His daughter Lisa succeeded him as the U.S. senator from Alaska.
Sarah Palin succeeded him as the governor of Alaska.
