Molecular biologist who was the first scientist to clone HIV and determine the gene's functions. She co-founded iTherX Pharmaceuticals, which focuses on developing treatment for hepatitis C.
She worked at the National Cancer Institute with Robert Gallo.
She was the chairman of UCSD's Center for AIDS Research.
She resided in Los Angeles where she conducted her research.
She and Nobel Prize winner Luc Montagnier both gained notoriety for their work on HIV.
