Two-time Emmy Award-winning African American comedian who often played the sassy Geraldine on the television variety show, The Flip Wilson Show.
He lied about his age and joined the U.S. Air Force at 16 years old after bouncing around foster homes.
In 1972, Time magazine called him TV's first black superstar.
He married first wife, Lovenia Patricia Wilson in 1957 and they divorced after 10 years. He would remarry and divorce over a decade later with Tuanchai MacKenzie.
He was known to have influenced the comedic style of Chris Rock.
