Hungarian-born playwright, novelist, director and poet. His plays include "The Devil," "Liliom," "The Swan," "The Guardsman" and "The Play's the Thing." His most their novel is "The Paul Street Boys."
He worked as a journalist.
He immigrated to the United States to escape persecution of Hungarian Jews during World War II.
He was married three times. His first two marriages ended in divorce. His third wife was Lili Darvas.
He was influenced by Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw and Gerhart Hauptmann.
