American-born singer and performer of Cape Verdean music who was the patriarch of the musical Tavares family.
He taught himself guitar by listening to Cape Verdean music on the radio.
His sister was also a Cape Verdean music singer; they were both inducted into the Cape Verdean Museum Hall of Fame.
His five sons performed as the Tavares Brothers and won a Grammy Award.
The jazz musician Horace Silver also came from a Cape Verdean family.
