About

Structural engineer who designed the Sears Tower and developed the principles of tall-building construction. Called the Father of tubular designs, especially as used in high-rise buildings. Pioneered CAD or computer-aided design.

Before Fame

He earned a Ph.D. in structural engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His undergraduate studies took place at the Bengal Engineering College (later Bengal Engineering & Science University, University of Calcutta) and the University of Dhaka's Ahsanullah Engineering College (later Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology).

Trivia

He designed the Willis Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the United States, as well as the John Hancock Center, which was 100-stories tall.

Family Life

He and his wife, Liselotte, had a daughter, Yasmin. He loved poetry, especially the work of Rabindranath Tagore.
