Inspired by her mentally disabled sister, Rosemary, she launched a summer day camp for the disabled in her backyard.
Her one-woman operation eventually grew into an annual international event with over 3 million participants.
She was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, the fifth of nine children. Robert and were her brothers.
From humble beginnings, her program for the disabled came to involve world leaders, like Princess Charlene of Monaco, who served as the Special Olympics Ambassador.
