An Estonian children's author and publisher, he rose to prominence during the middle of the Twentieth Century. During the 1950s, he worked for the Estonian National Library.
He graduated from college with a degree in Estonian language studies.
His best-known works include Three Funny Friends, The Story of the Flying Saucer, and Fire in a Darkened City.
Born in Tartu, Estonia, he was the son of writer Mart Raud.
He was a contemporary of American writer Norman Mailer.
