Ennis Rees
Poet
South Carolina Poet Laureate and children's poet known for Gillygaloos and Gollywhoppers, Windwagon Smith, and other verse works. He also translated the Iliad and Odyssey of Homer.
He grew up in Newport News, Virginia and graduated from both the College of William and Mary and Harvard University.
He taught at Duke University and Princeton University before beginning his long-lasting academic career at the University of South Carolina.
He married Marion Lott and became the father of three children.
He and fellow poet Claudia Emerson were both born in Virginia.
