An American writer and journalist, he is best known for such Western novels as Barbed Wire and Buffalo Wagons.
He served in the U.S. Army's infantry division during World War II.
He spent most of his childhood on a Texas ranch.
With his wife, Anni Lipp, he had three children.
His novel The Good Old Boys was made into a television movie starring Tommy Lee Jones.
