Wife of Chester A. Arthur, the twenty-first President of the United States from 1881 to 1885. She unfortunately died of pneumonia before he took office.
She met Chester A. Arthur through her cousin, who was Arthur's friend.
She was a talented soprano and sang with the Mendelssohn Glee Club and performed at benefits around New York.
She had two surviving children from her marriage to Chester.
Both she and First Lady Nancy Reagan were the only children in their families.
