Elizabeth Oakes Smith
Poet
American poet and author who is remembered for a poem entitled "The Sinless Child." She is also known for "Woman and Her Needs" and other feminist-themed essay collections.
She grew up in Maine and, at the age of twelve, taught Sunday School to African-American children.
Her debut novel was entitled Riches Without Wings; her later works of fiction include The Newsboy and Bertha and Lily.
She married magazine editor Seba Smith in 1823 and subsequently gave birth to six sons.
She and Rita Mae Bron were both feminist authors.
