Elizabeth Blackburn
Biologist
Australian researcher of biology from the University of California, San Francisco who has studied the telomere, a structure at the end of chromosomes that protects the chromosome. She was awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
She earned a Bachelor of Science in 1970 and a Master of Science in 1972 from the University of Melbourne.
She served on the Science Advisory Board of the Genetics Policy Institute.
She married John W. Sedat and they have a son, Benjamin.
Like her, scientist Alexandre Quintanilha worked at the University of California, Berkeley.
