The founder of the first Catholic school in America, the Saint Joseph's Academy and Free School, which was located in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
She lost her mother very early in her life, and then lost her step-mother when her father divorced.
She is considered the patron saint of Catholic schools and she was the first native-born American citizen to be canonized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.
Her parents were named Catherine Charlton and Richard Bayley.
Her father remarried a woman distantly related to Franklin D. Roosevelt.
