Eliza R. Snow
Poet
Nineteenth-century American poet whose works, such as "How Great the Wisdom and the Love," address the role of women in the domestic sphere. Several of her poems, including "Great is the Lord," were set to music as Latter-day Saints hymns.
She grew up in a religious household, and she and her originally Baptist family members eventually joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Her poems were published by The Western Courier and The Ohio Star.
She was born in Massachusetts, and she later settled in Utah. She entered polygamist marriages with Mormon leaders Joseph Smith, Jr. and Brigham Young.
She and Edgar Allan Poe were literary contemporaries.
