Long-distance runner who won a silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics and two bronze medals at the 2005 Helsinki World Championships.
She surpassed her cousin to win the silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics and was beaten by her sister at the 2005 IAAF World Championships in Athletics.
Her first marathon was the 2011 Chicago Marathon, where her 2:22:09 was the third-fastest marathon debut time.
She was born into an athletic family: her younger sister, Tirunesh, and cousin
She and fellow Ethiopian Olympian Kenenisa Bekele were both born in the village of Bekoji.
