U.S. Army officer who was criticized by both Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy for his highly conservative, sometimes controversial politics. He resigned from military service in 1961 was the target of an assassination attempt in 1963.
He was born in Kerr County and graduated from the New Mexico Military Institute in 1927.
He led a riot at the University of Mississippi in response to the school's admission of an African-American student.
He was never married and had no children.
He was portrayed by Cameron Mitchell in the 1985 film Prince Jack.
