Edwin D. Kilbourne
Virologist
Research scientist who made significant contributions to the study and prevention of influenza and other viral diseases. He was also a prolific writer who wrote about both science and non-science related topics. He published humorous verses and essays in magazines.
He attended Cornell University, where he received his MD.
He developed the first genetically engineered vaccine of any kind and he received the New York Academy of Medicine Award in 1983.
He had five children with his wife Joy Schmid Kilbourne, who he was married to for 58 years.
He was influenced by Madame Curie.
