Influential musician, writer, and teacher known for his mastery of Chopin and Beethoven and his advocacy of contemporary music.
He attended the Leipzig Conservatory. He was taught by Ignaz Moscheles.
He was named professor of piano in 1895 at the Royal College of Music where he would teach until his passing.
He fled to Leipzig in 1859 to get away from the pressure his father was putting on him to make banking a career.
He promoted Richard Wagner's works and established the London Wagner Society in 1872.
