He was raised in Chicago by Scottish immigrants and attended the University of Chicago but was expelled after devoting too much time to theatre.
He wrote the 1927 Broadway play The Racket, which featured Edward G. Robinson in his first gangster role.
He married Adelaide Maurine Bledsoe, the daughter of Santa Fe Railroad president Samuel Bledsoe.
His play Hey Diddle Diddle premiered in Princeton in 1937, which starred Lucille Ball.
