He was born in Penang, Malaysia.
He was a four-time men's singles winner at the All England Open Badminton Championships.
His brother, David Ewe Choong, with whom he played men's doubles, was also a badminton professional.
Lee Chong Wei is a younger, Malaysian-born badminton player.
