He performed with the great jazz artists of the 1930s, including Wayman Carver, Clarence Love, and Benny Carter.
His version of Begin the Beguine was a 1944 hit and kicked off three of the most successful years of his career.
His father Eddie Heywood Sr., also a jazz musician, began training him when he was 12.
He performed back-up for Billie Holiday in 1941.
