American cartoonist remembered most for creating the popular comic book character, Popeye. The Elzie Segar Award was created in 1971 to honor his contributions to cartooning.
When he was 18, he decided to pursue animation and cartooning, and took a correspondence course with W.L. Evans.
In 1971, The National Cartoonists Society created the Elzie Segar Award to honor his contributions in the field.
He was married until his death in 1938.
He created Popeye, which would later be rebooted in 2012 by cartoonist Bruce Ozella.
